'If I could clap my hands and burn out every camera phone in the world, I swear I'd do it': Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin expresses his dismay at fan selfie requests. He may be the wealthy wordsmith behind smash-hit TV series Game of Thrones. But author George RR Martin isn't completely happy with his new-found celebrity status. Speaking to The Guardian, the 65 year-old has said that an increasing level of demanding fans have made him wish for the eradication of all smart phones.
Addressing journalist and broadcaster Mark Lawson at the Edinburgh Book Festival, he said the level of fame he now experiences as the author of A Song of Fire And Ice is excessive.
'A few years ago I came to Edinburgh wife my wife and we were able to listen to the street musicians and go to plays and comedy performances and the military Tattoo. And, in the whole week we were here, maybe three people recognized me, and I was happy to sign an autograph for them.
'Now, three or four people recognize me every block. I can't go out any more; I can't walk the streets. And it's great to have all these readers and fans who, for the most part, are very nice people, saying they love the books and the TV show.
'But there are so many of them and it just doesn't end. Oh, and 'selfies'! If I could clap my hands and burn out every camera phone in the world, I swear I'd do it!'
The next series is already made, but the following two series will only become a reality once he has physically written the novels, including The Winds Of Winter and A Dream Of Spring - neither of which has a release date.
Season 5 of the HBO series will air in April 2015.
